The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition which is useful as a liquid crystal display material and in which the dielectric anisotropy (&Dgr;&egr;) shows a negative value, and a liquid crystal display element using the same. The present invention provides: a liquid crystal composition which, without reducing the refractive index anisotropy (&Dgr;&eegr;) and nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (Tni), has sufficiently low viscosity (&eegr;), sufficiently low rotational viscosity (γ1) and large elastic constants (K33), and in which the absolute value has a large negative &Dgr;&egr;; and a liquid crystal display element using the same which has excellent display quality for VA types, etc. and a fast response speed. This liquid crystal display element using the liquid display composition has a prominent feature of fast response and is useful, in particular, for a liquid crystal display element for active matrix driving, and can be applied to the VA mode, PSVA mode, PSA mode, IPS mode or ECB mode. |
