The present teachings provide apparatuses and methods for automated handling of samples, e.g., biological or chemical samples. The apparatuses and the methods of the present teachings allow automated performance of various sample manipulation steps without manual intervention. In a preferred embodiment, the present teachings provide apparatuses and methods for automated enrichment of templated beads produced by PCR.

1. An apparatus comprising:
a platform including a channel to receive an array of compartments; the array of compartments disposed in the channel; a magnet disposed in the platform and proximal to an end compartment of the array of compartments; a translation device including a mounting for a pipette tip; and an electronic control unit programmed to facilitate relative movement of the array and the magnet to apply and remove a magnetic field from at least one compartment of the array, the electronic control unit programmed to control the translation device to position the pipette tip in the at least one compartment.
