[Also in Division F2] In a boring or milling machine the column 1, Figs. 1, 2, is secured to the bed 4 by rods 7, so that the bed and column are prestressed in compression. In a modification, rods 7, Fig. 4, pass through the column 1, the bed 4, and a concrete foundation 10, and are each provided with a spherical washer 12. A pair of adjustable wedges 13, 14, are placed between the bed and the foundation, and a rod passes therethrough. The length of the rods can be reduced by introducing a support member into the column as the upper end of the rods, or as their lower ends, or as both ends. |
