[Also in Division D1] Compounds of the formula where A is a benzene nucleus substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group of 1 or 2 carbon atoms, R is H or alkyl of 1-3 carbon atoms which may be substituted by Cl, OH, OCH 3 or CN, B is a benzene or naphthalene nucleus which may be substituted and X# is an anion are prepared by ( 1 ) reacting compounds of the formula and oxidizing the resulting leuco compound, (2) reacting a bis-(N-subatituted amino)-benzhydrol with a suitable aryl compound and subjecting the product to oxidation, or (3) by reacting a compound of the formula with aniline or a derivative thereof Y being halogen or a sulpho, nitro, hydroxy or alkoxy group, phenol may also be reacted with such compounds. The dyestuff is isolated by salting- out or by adding, for example, zinc chloride. An acidic solution of the dyestuff may be neutralized to give the corresponding carbinol base.
