A tubular core, e.g. carrying paper 13 in a paper winding machine, is fixed to a shaft 17 by means of radially expandible segments 21-23 having V-shaped internal surfaces 26-28 cooperating with a polygonal section of the shaft 17, and being urged radially outwards by springs 44 between the segments, collars (31), (32), Fig. 3 (not shown), at each end of the polygonal section of the shaft having axially extending flanges (38), (39) overlying the ends of the segments to limit their radial movement. On mounting the core on the segments 21-23, the segments are held against the inside of the core by springs 44 and, on turning the core by unwinding the paper 13, the segments initially rotate about the shaft 17 and the apexes 18a on the shaft abut the inner V-shape surfaces 26-28 on the segments camming them into firmer contact with the core and rotating the shaft. Two such sets of segments are provided, one at each end of the core, on the same or different shafts. In Fig. 4, (not shown), the segments are formed with a radially inwardly directed flange (53) having an axially directed extension over which lies a flange (52) on a disc (49) screwed to the end of the shaft to limit the radially outward movement of the segments.</p> |
