A rotary-scythe mower comprises an elongated flat casing maintained parallel to the ground and just above it, the casing housing gears which drive a plurality of vertical shafts protruding through the top of the casing and each carrying a cutting- disc, the cutting-discs being arranged in oppositely-rotating pairs, with their cutting planes overlapping at a point in advance of the casing, whereby the upper surface of each disc is entirely exposed and the mown crop is discharged thereover by the co-operation of adjacent discs whose cutters move rearwardly in the same direction. Each disc has a pair of pivoted blades diametrically spaced and arranged at 90 degrees to those of the neighbouring disc. Between the blades the disc may be flat or is, preferably, formed into a dome which has a depending skirt co-operation with a groove or projection on the casing to prevent the ingress of dirt or cuttings to the driving shafts. Each disc may incorporate additional fan-like projections (Fig. 3A, not shown) to produce an updraught of air over the cutting disc, or may have a replaceable wear-resistant strip (Fig. 5, not shown) preceding each cutter blade in the direction of motion to reduce wear thereon. At one end of the casing is an upstanding gear-box which receives the drive-input and serves to midmount the casing transversely of a tractor so that it can swing about both a vertical and a horizontal axis. The mounting may incorporate a break-back device (Fig. I, not shown) operable by obstructions. A spring- loaded outer divider or swath-board may be provided. The casing may be provided with ground-engaging shoes along its length and these may terminate forwardly in groups of prong-like dividers (Fig. 7, not shown). |
