Infant monitoring apparatus, 10, comprises a portable receiver, 12, and an infant monitoring device, 14. The infant monitoring device is configured to transmit data from a first location, at which an infant is located, to a second location, remote from the first location, where the receiver is located. The receiver comprises a receiver for infant monitoring data, a non-contact temperature sensing device, which may be a digital infra red thermometer, and a display, 58(1) and 58(2), which may be configured to display images derived from said infant monitoring data. The receiver may also comprise an audio output device and an audio capturing device. The infant monitoring data may be transmitted using frequency hopping spread spectrum transmission.
