The portable computing device selects an operating system from a plurality of available operating systems installed on the portable computing device in view of the received data. The portable computing device loads the selected operating system.

detecting, by a computing device, a connection to a host computing device; receiving, by the computing device, data from the host computing device identifying at least one of a device type of the host computing device or properties of the host computing device; selecting, by the computing device, an operating system from a plurality of available operating systems installed on the computing device in view of the received data; and loading the selected operating system.
