A unit 1 for capturing and transporting a skin-print (such as a fingerprint) has a housing 2 holding a sample-capture substrate such as glass in a chamber (26, figure 2). First and second parts of the housing (such as a frame 20 and a shutter 10) are moveable relative to each other from a first closed configuration in which the substrate is inaccessible, to a first open configuration for capturing a sample, to a second closed configuration in which the substrate is again inaccessible. A retaining mechanism locks the unit in the second closed position but can be disabled, preferably by the breaking of a tamper-evident frangible element. Preferably the frangible element can only be disabled by a complementary analysis machine. A pin on the shutter may run in a bifurcated (Y-shaped) channel (11, figure 4) to direct the shutter from the first to the second closed position. A second shutter may be present on the opposite face of the unit and opens only when the first shutter is opened from its second closed position. |
