A system for distinguishing between bank notes in a bank note processing machine comprises a conveyance device for transporting a bank note along a transport path and a detector comprising an optical sensor and an ultrasonic sensor disposed at a desired location along the path. The optical sensor identifies a transparent region at the desired location and the ultrasonic sensor determines if the transparent region corresponds to a transparent gap.
