A system for reducing and briquetting refuse comprises an inclined screw conveyor 10, Fig. 3, a hammer mill 12 a chute and pre-compactor 14 and an extruder-compactor 16, which delivers briquettes to an output chute 115. Air from the mill 12 is recirculated from the pre-compactor 14 by a pipe 80. The mill 10, Fig. 4, comprises eight hammers 50 spaced by washers 52 and disposed on hammer pins 38, 39, which are locked in position on a plate 41 by pins 32, 43. The hammers are tipped 50a with a carbide material. Similarly tipped sweepers 55 sweep the waste out of the mill. Cutter bars 60, 61 in the mill provide initial size reduction. Adjustable breaker plates 65 control the final particle size. Material from the mill is delivered to the compactor 16 via the chute 14 which includes a paddle 82. This scrapes off material from the walls of the chute. The compactor 16 comprises bars 95, Fig. 8, mounted on a support plate 96, guided by rollers 106 and actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 99. Liquid is drained at 190 and may be flushed via an inlet connection 193. In a modification the chute - pre - compactor 14 may include an hydraulic cylinder 135, Fig. 9, driving a frame scraper 147 so that material is both scraped and tamped.
