[Problem] To provide a self-depositing coating composition, which can have similar film depositability on numerous kinds of metal materials using the same self-depositing coating composition, and a resin coating method. [Solution] A method for manufacturing a self-depositing coating composition for numerous kinds of metal materials, the method being characterized: in comprising a process for adding to an aqueous solvent at least a water-dispersible or water-soluble anionic organic resin, a soluble trivalent iron source, a soluble fluorine source, and an organic component having at least one carboxyl group or carboxyl group salt in the molecule; and in making the mole ratio of the soluble trivalent iron to soluble fluorine ([no. of moles of soluble fluorine])/([no. of moles of soluble trivalent iron]){when the organic component here is an organic acid metal salt, ([no. of moles of soluble fluorine])/([no. of moles of soluble trivalent iron]+[no. of moles of organic acid salt-derived metal cation component])} solubilized in the aqueous solvent in said process to be 1.0-3.2.
