A method of operating a wireless communications network, the method comprising the steps of: a) receiving a plurality of data packets comprising a real time communication session from a network node connected to the wireless communications network; b) determining a plurality of packet period parameter values, the data packet period parameter being determine by the time period between the reception of a data packet and the reception of the subsequent data packet; c) determining a plurality of jitter parameter values, the jitter parameter being determined by the difference between one data packet period parameter value and the subsequence data packet period parameter values; and d) determining, using the computer system including a computer processor, the performance of the wireless communications network in accordance with the ratio of an average of the jitter parameter value determine in step c) to an average of the packet period parameter values.
