摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarized light illuminating device with which random light beams from a light source can be converted in any arbitrary polarizing direction by reducing the spread of illuminating light and enlarging an illumination F number. SOLUTION: Light from a light source 106 in the random polarizing direction is made incident through an optical integrator system 102 provided with a second lens plate 110, to which modified opening design is performed, to a polarized light separating part 103. The polarized light separating part 103 separates the incident light into two polarized light in orthogonal polarizing directions. Afterwards, the polarizing directions of these changed light are aligned by a polarized light converting part 104. Thus, the polarized light illuminating device, with which light in the random polarizing directions is converted to any arbitrary polarizing direction and the spread of illuminating light is suppressed, can be provided. Such a polarized light illuminating device can be appropriately utilized as an illuminator for a projection image display device using a liquid crystal light bulb for performing modulation by using polarized light and the cost-down and luminance improvement of this device can be made compatible.
