An optical fiber cable assembly (30) for use in a fluid environment includes an elongated optical fiber cable (34) having a negative buoyancy. A first supplemental filament (32) has a positive buoyancy and is connected to the elongated optical fiber cable, e.g. by coiling it around an outer surface of the cable, to form a composite cable assembly having a composite buoyancy that is generally neutral.
