A direct injection engine comprises an injector that injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber and a spark plug that causes an ignition spark in the combustion chamber. An ECU performs a plurality of first injections so that an air-fuel mixture with a lean air-fuel ratio is formed in each injection in the combustion chamber before ignition in a single combustion cycle of the engine, and similarly performs a second injection before ignition and after the first injection so that an air-fuel mixture with a rich air-fuel ratio is formed in the combustion chamber. Specifically, the plurality of first injections are performed so that the air-fuel mixture of a first injection, from the plurality of first injections, that is performed prior has an air-fuel mixture that is leaner than a first injection performed later. Moreover, the second injection is performed only once immediately before the ignition.
