PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a papermaking additive capable of improving drainage with a relatively small amount added, that is, without causing problems of cost increase or texture deterioration of paper products. ! SOLUTION: A papermaking additive contains: a cationic polymer obtained by polymerization of a cationic vinyl monomer represented by the general formula (I) in the figure and a nonionic vinyl monomer; and an amphoteric polymer comprising a (meth)acrylic acid based anionic vinyl monomer, a cationic vinyl monomer represented by the general formula (I) in the figure, and a nonionic vinyl monomer. (In the formula, R1 is H or CH3, A is O or NH, R2 is an optionally hydroxyl group-substituted alkyl group having 2-4 carbon atoms, R3 is H or an alkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms, R4 is H, an optionally hydroxyl group-substituted alkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms or a benzyl group, and X- is a halogen ion, a sulfonate ion, a methyl sulfate ion or a hydroxide ion.) !
