A method for providing an image of a surface (4), including a contoured surface (4), such as of the underbody (4) of a motor vehicle (2), by means of at least one image-recording device (14), comprises the following steps: a) recording images (Ti) of one or more regions of the surface (4) with different exposure and/or lighting; b) producing an optimised image (Ei) for each of the regions from the plurality of recorded images (Ti); and c) combining the optimised images (Ei) produced for the individual regions of the surface (4) in order to form an optimised whole image (G) of the surface (4).
