A method for coating metal surfaces, in particular surfaces of wheels made of an aluminium alloy, in a multi-step method, wherein the metallic surfaces are first contacted with an aqueous composition predominantly containing silane/silanol/siloxane/polysiloxane and thereafter contacted with an aqueous composition predominantly containing at least one phosphonic compound.
