The present invention enables a car navigation device having a hierarchical menu to be operated by simple gestures. Provided is a method executed by a car navigation device that is provided with a memory unit (102) that associates and stores user gestures and operations for the car navigation device the operation menu of which is a hierarchical structure. The method is characterized by the following: when detection is made that a switch (12) has been pressed, a sensor (14) subsequently detects a gesture; the operation associated with the detected gesture is obtained from the memory unit (102), and with respect to a screen displayed on a display unit (20) at the time the gesture was detected, the result of executing the obtained operation is output to the display unit (20); and when detection is made that the switch (12) has been released, and if detection is made that the switch (12) is subsequently pressed again within a predetermined time, the same process is repeated.
