The present invention provides a method for operating a proximity sensing function in an electronic device with a touchscreen, the method comprises the steps of: detecting a request for activating the proximity sensing function; measuring an illumination value corresponding to the quality of light received to an illumination sensor in response to the request; and changing a preset reference threshold of the proximity sensing function determining whether an object approaches by reflecting the measured illumination value in the preset reference threshold when the measured illumination value is different from the preset reference threshold.
