The present disclosure relates to a method and apparatus for preventing a hovering input which may be wrongly processed according to states of holding the electronic device in a hovering input mode of the electronic device. A method for operating an electronic device includes checking a state of the electronic device in a hovering input mode, setting one or more partial inactive regions in an active region of a touchscreen based on the checked state of the electronic device, changing the position of a hovering cursor generated in the active region according to a hovering input, and processing a command corresponding to the hovering cursor when the hovering cursor is moved to the inactive regions.
