A liquid crystal medium that has stability to heat, light and the like, also has extremely high dielectric anisotropy, and can develop an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase has been demanded. Various optical elements each of which can be used in a broad temperature range and has a short response time, a large contrast ratio and a low driving voltage have also been demanded. A liquid crystal composition which comprises an achiral component (T) comprising at least one compound (1) represented by formula (1) and a chiral agent, and can develop an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. In formula (1), R1 represents an alkyl group or the like, L1 and L2 independently represent a fluorine atom or a hydrogen atom, and X1 represents a halogen atom or the like. |
