The invention relates to a method for ascertaining the value document inventory of a device (12) for receiving value documents. The orientation of a value document is ascertained before the value document is fed to the device (12), and the sequence in which the value documents are received in the device (12) is stored. The orientation of each of at least some of the received value documents is stored so as to be uniquely assigned to the respective value document. The respective orientation of a specified number of value documents removed one after the other is ascertained in order to ascertain the inventory. Said ascertained orientations are compared with the stored orientations, and the value document inventory of the device (12) is ascertained dependent on the result of the comparison.
