PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an AF control technology by which a main subject is not immediately shifted to the other subject even when the main subject is gone from a screen in the case where a plurality of subjects exist in the screen. SOLUTION: An imaging device comprises: imaging means to generate an image signal by photoelectrically converting a subject image incident through a photographic optical system; subject detection means to detect a subject in an image screen from the image signal generated by the imaging means; main subject selection means to select a main subject from the subject detected by the subject detection means and to select a new main subject from the other subject in the image screen when the previously selected main subject is gone from the image screen; focus detection means to detect a state of focus on the main subject selected by the main subject selection means; focus adjustment means to perform a focus adjustment operation based on the state of focus detected by the focus detection means; and control means to prohibit the main object selection means to select the new main subject for a predetermined period when the main subject is gone from the image screen.
