<p>Device 1 is positioned between railway tracks in a rail network. The device 1 includes a radar module 3, which can be a solid state Doppler radar, and antenna 4 together with an additional number of sensors 5-8, such as a temperature, humidity or pressure sensor, capable of providing environmental and structural information on the track, the individual rails or the environment immediately adjacent the track. The device 1further comprises wireless communications means 13, e.g. a GSM or GSM-R module, thereby enabling the transfer of data collected from the device 1 to a central processing unit. The wireless communications means 13 may also enable the device 1 to be updated remotely. The device 1 can feature power management enabling it to hibernate when not in use and activate when triggered by a predetermined signal. The device 1 can further comprise a GPS module 15 and RFID module 11 to identify specific rolling stock in use on the track. An accelerometer and magnetometer can also be used in monitoring the rolling stock. Multiple devices 1 can be used in a system to provide monitoring around a railway network.</p> |
