The present invention relates to a device and a method for performing bit interleaving for coded bits generated by channel coding for transmission of incremental redundancy (IR) in a transmission device of a digital image broadcast system. To this end, the method for performing bit interleaving comprises: sequentially recording coded bits in a memory region having a predetermined size; reading the coded bits recorded in the memory region based on reading sequences which are differently set in response to normal transmission and at least one IR transmission; and outputting one coded information bit stream interleaved for the normal transmission and at least one coded redundant bit stream interleaved for the IR transmission.
