The present invention relates to a digital photographing apparatus and a controlling method thereof. The digital photographing apparatus includes a lens unit; an encoder sensor detecting a rotation state of the lens unit; a power control unit controlling the power to repeatedly perform an operation of switching the encoder sensor off and an operation of generating a detection signal by switching the encoder sensor on; and a determination unit determining a rotation state of the lens unit by receiving the detection signal.
