This tapered roller bearing (1) is provided with: an inner race (2); an outer race (3); a plurality of tapered rollers (4) interposed between the outer and inner races; and a retainer (5) for retaining the tapered rollers (4) in a state preventing escape radially outward. In a location adjacent to an inner-race raceway surface (2a) of a small flange (7) provided on the inner race (2) is provided a reduced-diameter section (7b), the outer-diameter surface of which has a smaller diameter than the other portion (7a) of the small flange (7). The outer diameter (&phgr;2) of the other portion (7a) of the small flange (7) is greater than, and the outer diameter (&phgr;d3) of the reduced-diameter section (7b) is less than, the diameter (&phgr;d1) of a circle inscribed in the sequence of tapered rollers (4) in the assembly (10) of the retainer and the rollers not yet installed in the inner race (2), the tapered rollers (4) being retained in the retainer (5). |
