569,575. Making nuts. ALLIED CONTROL CO., Inc. Oct. 25, 1943, No. 17565. Convention date, Feb. 6. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging ; punches and dies.-In the manufacture of lock-nuts of the type shown in Fig. 7, a shell, as shown in Fig. 6, is formed from a flat blank, which may be polygonal and of the size required for the body of the nut, in closed dies in a press. The nut is completed by punching, tapping and closing down the tabs 6 on to. the flexible insert 4. The blank 10 is supported by an ejector rod 17 passing through a punch 15 with a reduced part 18 to form the part 3 of the nut and with cutaway parts (not shown) to form the tabs 6. The punch and die are secured in the base 23 by a holder 13 and cover-plate 13a apertured to fit the punch 20 formed at 21 to produce the countersink 7a. Rods 25 carried by the press-head 24 support a cross-bar 26 that supports the ejector by a shoulder 32. Screws 28 in the base 23 support an abutment 29 to arrest the movement of the ejector when its top is level with that of the projection 18. Springs 31 engage the crossbar to effect ejection on the upstroke. In a modification, the punch 20 is shaped to form the parts 3, 6 of the nut and the ejector rod forms the countersink.
