The present invention primarily concerns certain 4-alkyl pyridines of the following formula (I),;
wherein R is C8-C12 alkyl, odiferous substance mixtures and aromatic substance mixtures containing these 4-alkyl pyridines, the respective uses thereof as an odiferous or aromatic substance (mixture) and corresponding perfumed products.

A method for imparting a marine odor to a human comprising applying a composition comprising 0.000001 to 2 wt. % of one or more 4-C8-C12-alkyl pyridine(s) and one or more further odiferous or aromatic substance(s) to the human, and wherein the one or more 4-alkyl pyridine(s) is selected from the group consisting of 4-n-decyl pyridine, 4-n-undecyl pyridine, 4-n-dodecyl pyridine and mixtures thereof.
