Process for purification of aryl carboxylic acids

Disclosed herein is a process for purifying aryl carboxylic acids, in particular terephthalic acid, wherein the impure acid is dissolved or dispersed in an ionic liquid and a non-solvent is added to precipitate the purified acid. The present disclosure further relates to compositions comprising terephthalic acid and one or more ionic liquids.

1. A composition comprising one or more aryl carboxylic acids and one or more ionic liquids, wherein the ionic liquids comprise:
a) a cation chosen from imidazole; and b) an anion chosen from:
i) F−, Cl−, Br−, and I−;ii) substituted or unsubstituted (R10O)2P(═O)O−;R10 is independently substituted or unsubstituted linear; branched, and cyclic alkyl.
