Provided are compounds and compositions thereof that are useful as antioxidants in personal care formulations. The compounds are of the formula I:;;wherein R, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are as defined herein.

1. A personal care composition comprising:
(a) an antioxidant compound of formula I:wherein R is C1-C10 alkyl, C3-C12 cycloalkyl, aryl, or aryl-alkyl;R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 are independently H, C1-C10 alkyl, hydroxy, C1-C6 alkoxy, —COOH, —COO−M+, or —O−M+, where M+ is sodium or potassium or ammonium ion, provided that at least one of R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 is hydroxy; and R6 is H, C1-C10 alkyl, C3-C12 cycloalkyl or phenyl; and
(b) a dermatologically acceptable carrier.
