Method, apparatus and computer program product for processing a video signal, the video signal comprising a plurality of frames, wherein the frames of the video signal are received at a jitter buffer, and the frames are output from the jitter buffer at a variable output rate to account for jitter in the received frames. Variations in the output rate are controlled in dependence upon the visual information content of the video signal, the visual information content of the video signal being the portion of the video signal that is to be displayed when the video signal is played out.

1. A method of processing a video signal, the video signal comprising a plurality of frames, the method comprising:
receiving the frames of the video signal at a jitter buffer, the jitter buffer configured to include an ability to:
hold multiple sections of the video signal, each section associated with a separate region of the video signal; andoutput at least one section of the video signal at a different output rate than other sections of the video signal; and outputting the frames from the jitter buffer at a variable output rate to account for jitter in the received frames, wherein variations in the variable output rate are controlled in dependence upon visual information content associated with the video signal, the visual information content associated with the video signal being a portion of the video signal that is to be displayed when the video signal is played out.
