PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means to obtain long lifetime of an organic EL element.SOLUTION: An organic EL element includes at least a light-emitting layer containing a host material and a dopant material, and a hole transport layer, between a negative electrode and a positive electrode facing each other. In the organic EL element, an intermediate layer is provided so as to be brought into contact with the positive electrode side of the light-emitting layer, the hole transport layer is provided on the positive electrode side of the intermediate layer, an ionization potential E1 of a hole transport material constituting the hole transport layer, an ionization potential E2 of an intermediate material constituting the intermediate layer, an ionization potential E3 of the host material and an ionization potential E4 of the dopant material satisfy expressions (2) and (3), and the intermediate material is a compound having at least one of a carbazole ring and a carboline ring.
