The drive device has a position-controllable direct drive motor that is connected with drive shaft of a plate cylinder (7) for controlling of the printing machine. An actuated working clutch is assigned to the bearing of the plate cylinder driving wheel on drive shaft, such that the driving wheel is rotatably fixed on the drive shaft during the printing operation in first mode when clutch is closed, and the driving wheel is freely rotated on drive shaft during the printing operation in a second mode when clutch is released. An independent claim is included for a method for operating drive device.
