Disclosed is a composition comprising: 1. a chitosan hydrogel comprising cross-linked chitosan and water 2. a liquid dispersed in the hydrogel and 3. an emulsifier, wherein the cross-linked chitosan is prepared from chitosan consisting of a randomly deacetylated linear polysaccharide composed of 1,4-beta-linked D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues having a degree of deacetylation of above 35 to 75%, and a cross-linking agent, where the molar ratio of the cross-linking agent to chitosan is 0.2:1 or less based on the number of functional groups in the cross-linking agent and the number of deacetylated amino groups in the chitosan. The composition may be used for the delivery of water insoluble drugs such as vitamin D3, esomeprazole sodium, paclitaxel and budesonide. |
