Capacitors comprising a dielectric (e.g. ceramic) disc 1, Fig. 1, having electrode coatings to which are attached leads 4, 5 formed on the two surfaces thereof, are manufactured by arranging a plurality of hairpin-shaped pieces of soft metal, Fig. 3, side by side in a row, inserting metallized discs 1 between the crossedover ends 6, 7 of the hairpin members and applying a clamping pressure to the arms 4, 5 of the hairpin members by clamping together two pieces of card or other clamping means extending across the width of the hairpin members, one above and one below the plane thereof, so that on the application of pressure the discs 1 are gripped between the crossed-over ends 6, 7 the discs 1 thus held being then subjected to a dip-soldering operation. In a first embodiment of the invention an initial twist is given, as shown in the side view of Fig. 6, so that on clamping together the arms 4, 5 between the cardboard strips 10, 11 sufficient gripping force is provided between the ends 6, 7 to support the capacitors 1. The cardboard strips 10, 11 are held together by staples 12, 13 as shown in Fig. 5. The loops of the hairpins are subsequently cut to provide the finished capacitors as shown in Fig. 4. In a modification, Fig. 11, additional gripping force between the ends 6, 7 is provided by means of further clamping members 14, 15 the jaws of which are so shaped as to apply a reverse twist to the arm of the hairpins on the remote side of the cards 10, 11, Fig. 12 (not shown). In the arrangements so far described the finished capacitors are obtained mounted on the strips 10, 11 which are provided with slots 25 whereby they may be assembled in an appropriately constructed container. In a further modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the cardboard strips are replaced by clamping members having rubber-faced jaws and from which the capacitors are removed when their manufacture is completed. Fig. 16 (not shown) illustrates a further modification wherein each capacitor disc is attached to the adjacent arms of adjacent hairpin members. |
