摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a wrong determination of a distance change of a subject upon performing a focus control on a given subject such as a person and the like, and improve stability of a focus control and accuracy thereof .SOLUTION: The focus adjustment device includes: first detection means that photoelectrically converts light of a subject whose image is formed by an imaging optical system including a focus lens, and detects a first area of a predetermined subject from an image signal of each frame acquired from an image pickup element periodically outputting the photoelectrically converted image signal for each frame; second detection means that detects a second area thereof different from the first area; determination means that determines presence/absence of a distance change to the subject on the basis of a change in each size of the first and second areas in a plurality of frames; and calculation means that calculates an evaluation value representing a focus state of the focus lens on the basis of the image signal of the first area, and calculates a drive amount for driving the focus lens so as to focus on the subject on the basis of the evaluation value and a determination result by the determination means.
