Disclosed is a device for adjusting luminance, which can adjust maximum luminance based on characteristics of an input image inputted into a display device. The device for adjusting luminance according to an aspect of the present invention comprises: a histogram generation unit to calculate a frequency of each gray group having multiple gray levels by using a frequency of each gray level acquired in an input image and generate a histogram for each gray group by using the calculated frequency of each gray group; a property value calculation unit to calculate at least either a black ratio or a contrast of the input image by using the frequency of each gray group; a luminance gain determination unit to determine a luminance gain which is to be applied to the input image according to at least either the black ratio or the contrast of the input image; and a maximum luminance calculation unit to calculate maximum luminance of the input image based on an average picture level (APL) of the input image and correct the maximum luminance by applying the luminance gain to the maximum luminance. |
