Polyvinyl hydrogen sulphates in which the degree of esterification is from 60%-100% are made by reacting a polyvinyl alcohol with a solution of a chlorosulphonic acid-pyridine salt in pyridine, liberating the pyridine from the resulting salt by treating it with alkali, distilling off the pyridine and converting the resulting alkali metal salt into the polyvinyl hydrogen sulphate, e.g. by treatment with a cation exchanger. The polymers produced may be used as supports for acrylonitrile graft polymers with improved dyeing properties and these graft polymers may be made into filaments and fibres. U.S.A. Specification 2,623,037 is referred to.
