The method involves forming a cross sectional region (2) of an elongated material as a closed rectangular hollow section (1). The elongated material is heated above the austenitizing temperature. The heated elongated material is partially and actively cooled by a deterrence device. The partial cooling produced residual compressive stresses are exploited in a wall (5) of the hollow section to selectively set a desired cross-sectional geometry.
