<p>Road safety apparatus 4 comprises an audio device and sensor 12 mounted on a side of a vehicle (e.g. lorry, bus or other large vehicle). The sensor generates a signal upon sensing the presence of a person (e.g. pedestrian or cyclist) 6 in a detection zone 8 along the vehicles side and the audio device generates an audible warning to the person to move away. Multiple sensors may be mounted on one or both sides of the vehicle in a single or multiple rows along its length and may be ultrasonic or RADAR sensors. Their detection range may vary along the length of the vehicle, e.g. with a greater range in a blind spot. The apparatus may be activated at low vehicle speeds. The warning may be a pre-recorded message. Further visual and audible warnings may be given, e.g. to the driver.</p> |
