[Also in Group XI] Means for welding or drying adhesive in a packaging machine or for attaching a tear tape to a wrapper include a guide passage having a wall or wall portion of electrically conducting material heated directly by passing a current through it. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a tear strip 14 is attached to a web 13 of heat sealable material by pressing them, by means of a brush 7 into contact with a directly heated bar 2. The web is fed by rollers 18 and the end of the tear strip is cut to shape by rotary cutters 15, 17. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a stacker has one fixed wall 124 and three walls 106 adjustably mounted on parallel motion links 111. Each wall 106 comprises a heater tape 101 mounted so that its tension may be adjusted on a support 108 which is pivoted to the links at 112. The links allow adjustment to deal with different sizes of packages 117. In a further embodiment, Fig. 11, a guide channel has heater tapes 201 mounted one on each side of it so that the distance between them may be varied. Means may be provided for temporarily increasing the electric current on starting the machine to initially heat the conductors. A thermostatic control circuit is described. |
