When assisting the entry or exit of a car into/from a parking space by means of the automatic control of a steering device (2), calculations are performed such that the rise in temperature of the motor (2a) of the device (2) caused by the execution of automatic control is larger the larger the excess space (excess length) with respect to the size of the vehicle. Moreover, the predicted temperature of the motor (2a), which will rise as a result of the aforementioned automatic control, is calculated by adding that rise in temperature to the current value for the temperature of the motor (2a). If the predicted temperature is equal to or higher than the determined value, the execution of the aforementioned automatic control is disabled, and if the predicted temperature is lower than the determined value, the execution of the aforementioned automatic control is enabled.
