Paints suitable for walls comprise an aqueous emulsion of a thermoplastic resin and a contact insecticide insoluble in water and in the resin, the individual components and their proportions being so selected with respect to one another that the paint is capable of coalescing and covering a surface and exposing the insecticide so that the resulting coating film has insecticidal activity. Suitable thermoplastic resins are polybutadiene, polystyrene, butadiene-styrene copolymers, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl propionate, polyacrylate esters, polymethacrylate esters, polyvinyl chloride and vinyl copolymers. Insecticides specified are Lindane, Dilion, Dieldrin, Sinergide S150 (N-p-chlorobenzenesulphonyl - N - methyl - p - chloraniline), Chlordane, DDT and "Malathion" (Registered Trade Mark). Thickening or suspending agents and pigments or fillers may optionally be present, those exemplified being sodium polyacrylate, cellulose methyl ether, carboxymethylcellulose, cellulose hydroxyethyl ether, "Celite" (Registered Trade Mark), sodium tripolyphosphate, calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide. In one Example (Example 11), sodium orthophenylphenate, which is a fungicide and bactericide, is also included in the paint composition.
