The method involves measuring single or multi-dimensional accelerations i.e. vibrations in vertical direction, acting on a rail vehicle due to running wheel imbalance and/or deviation of scope of a running wheel from a circular shape by using an acceleration sensor, where the accelerations are characterized for actual velocity (V1) of the rail vehicle. The measurement of accelerations is filtered for eliminating DC-proximate and/or signal portions attributed to velocity-independent effects. The actual velocity of the rail vehicle is determined by processing acceleration signals.
