An electrode 1 (Fig. 1, not shown) in the form of a band or linked electrode members is inserted into a longitudinally folded separator 2 and the subassembly comprising the separator and electrode is superposed on a second electrode 3 similar to electrode 1. Electrode 3 is folded about an axis 3d perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the separator and then folded back on itself about an axis 3e. Electrodeseparator sub-assembly 1, 2 is now folded over the electrode 3 about an axis perpendicular to its longitudinal axis and perpendicular to the fold axes 3e and 3d of electrode 3, so that the electrode 3 is interleaved between the subassembly. These operations are repeated to provide an assembly comprising interleaved concertina folded electrodes. Due to the double folding of electrode 3 at 3e, each electrode subassembly may simply be slid away from the other for servicing without the need for unfolding. The longitudinal fold of separator 2 may be waterproofed. The separator may be porous, microporous, or semipermeable and may comprise one or several layers. Regenerated cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol may be used for silver electrodes. In an accumulator with an oxygen absorbent negative electrode an expanded metal backing is provided for the negative electrode. |
