PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a configuration of a mechanism that separates an image carrier and a developer carrier of a process cartridge.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: attachment parts to and from which each process cartridge P can be attached and detached; and engaging members 61 each capable of engaging with force receiving parts each provided to each of second unit 4 of the process cartridge P. The engaging member 61 can be moved among three different positions: a first position for engaging with the force receiving part 44b of the second unit 4 to maintain the second unit 4 at a separation position; a second position for allowing the second unit 4 to move from the separation position to a contact position during image formation; and a third position for retreating by being pressed by the process cartridge P when the process cartridge P is attached to the attachment part, so as to allow the process cartridge P to be attached to the attachment part.
