Liquid fuel dispensing apparatus includes a dispensing nozzle provided with electrical detector means operative to permit or prevent flow of fuel according to whether or not the nozzle is inserted in the metallic filler tube of a fuel tank. The detector means comprises an exciter coil energized with alternating current coupled with a detector coil and a compensator coil, the degree of coupling between the exciter and detector coils being reduced when the nozzle is inserted in the filler tube and the e.m,f, in the detector coil being thus reduced. If the nozzle is of aluminium, a lagging e.m.f. induced in the detector coil results in a phase change in the detector coil current which can be compared with a standard if the voltage reduction is insufficient. To enable the detecting means to distinguish between the nozzle boot of the dispensing apparatus and the filler tube the nozzle boot may be provided with a pick-up coil in which an e.m.f. is induced by the exciter coil to prevent operation of the petrol switch relay.</p> |
